Project Case Study

Fred Pirkle Engineering Technology Center

The Gessner Engineering geotechnical department worked on the Fred Pirkle Engineering Technology Center on the SHSU campus. The project consisted of a four-story building construction with a footprint of approximately 15,800 sf. The geotechnical department drilled 6 borings to depths of 40 ft to evaluate the soils and provide engineering recommendations for the proposed foundation. During the geotechnical investigation, it was determined that the soils at this site have less bearing capacity near the surface and that deeper footings may be necessary to carry the loads of the structure. The silty sands at this site made it difficult to get proper compaction of select fill. Gessner Engineering worked with the design team to help mitigate these issues during construction.
