Gessner Engineering provided a structural inspection, the geotechnical, civil and structural engineering, and construction materials testing services for the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority house totaling approximately 17,000 square feet. Gessner Engineering was originally called to provide structural inspection services for the two-story house due to uneven flooring assumingly caused by foundation movement. Upon the initial site visit, Gessner Engineering knew a more serious problem needed to be addressed. After the floor trusses in a number of rooms were exposed, serious structural deficiencies became apparent. Floor measurements confirmed the condition was occurring throughout the building. Given the severity of the failure, the occupants were relocated to a local hotel. When the evaluation of the facility was completed, Gessner Engineering determined the most cost effective repair involved demolition and rebuilding. Gessner Engineering worked as part of the team with national representatives of the organization to design the new facility and supported their efforts to get the residents back in a safe place to live.
