St. Joseph Regional Health Center

Gessner Engineering provided geotechnical engineering services for a new rural health clinic and parking lot in Robertson County. The proposed St. Joseph Regional Health Center will have a footprint of approximately 11,000 square feet. Subsurface conditions were evaluated by drilling four test bore holes to a depth of 20 feet and four test bore holes to a depth of 10 feet within the limits of the proposed health center. Expansive soils were found present on this site. Gessner Engineering provided recommendations to help mitigate the effects of soil shrinkage and expansion. A structural slab foundation system was the primary recommendation of Gessner Engineering because it would be the best performing foundation type in expansive soils. However, a structural slab is more costly and therefore is often not economically feasible. Alternately, based on the field and laboratory data available, along with previous experience, Gessner Engineering recommended a stiffened slab-on-grade foundation system; provided the subgrade is prepared as stated in the final geotechnical report.
