Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Building and Access Drive, Texas A&M University

Gessner Engineering provided geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and inspection services for the new building totaling approximately 49,000 square feet, and civil engineering services for the access drive. For geotechnical engineering, subsurface conditions were evaluated by drilling eight test bore holes to depths of approximately 50 feet below the existing ground surface within the limits of the proposed building. The bore holes were drilled using trailer-mounted drilling equipment. The primary recommendation of Gessner Engineering was to support the NMR facility on a structural foundation with a crawl space; provided the subgrade is prepared as stated in the report. Gessner Engineering anticipated high loads due to heavy magnetic equipment and provided recommendations to handle these loads. Materials testing services for the concrete and soils were completed through concrete tests, compaction tests, piers and density tests. This project included steel inspections. Gessner Engineering performed Atterberg Limit Determination (ASTM D 4318) and Standard Proctor Density Determination (ASTM D 698) tests on one sample of on-site trench fill material for the referenced project multiple times. This project came in under budget. Civil Engineering services included pavement design and the layout for the access drive totaling 6,067 square feet. This included sizing the reinforcement and the thickness of the concrete pavement to support heavy shipment loads.
