Gessner Engineering provided geotechnical and structural engineering, and construction materials testing services for the Classic Car House in Houston, Texas totaling approximately 22,000 square feet. The Classic Car House facility began as an existing vacant concrete tilt-wall building and has been transformed into a residence with interior mezzanines facing a new home to display an extensive muscle car collection. Charged with matching the beauty of a classic Shelby, the design expresses unique structural elements throughout the residence. The south end of the existing building was removed to make room for the steel-framed new structure. The finished product included stiffening of the existing wall panels and roof connections, a new second floor residence, interior mezzanines, a first floor shop space, and elevator. The design was modeled in REVIT Structure and designed using Risa 3D and Risa Floor analysis software. Member types, sizes and connections were coordinated closely with the architect since much of the steel was exposed. Highlighted elements of this project included cable supports for one area of the walkway and one staircase, the three-column elevator frame and suspension of the existing interior beam from the roof structure above.
